Proclamation Recognizing the Heroic Actions of the Mechanicville Fire Department

Whereas, on January 10, 2025, at approximately 11:50 a.m., the Mechanicville Police Department was dispatched to the Hemstreet Park Bridge in response to a report of an individual in a suicidal crisis; and

Whereas, upon arrival, officers found an individual who had scaled the protective fencing and was seated on the edge of the bridge, n immediate danger of jumping into the frigid waters of the Hudson River; and

Whereas, despite the heroic efforts of the officers to de-escalate the situation, the individual made the devastating decision to jump, plunging into the cold river below; and

Whereas, Deputy Fire Chief Matthew Dunn and the team of volunteer firefighters from the Mechanicville Fire Department (MFD) were on standby and, without hesitation, responded with extraordinary skill and urgency, launching their rescue boat and reaching the individual with remarkable speed; and

Whereas, through their swift and coordinated efforts, Deputy Fire Chief Dunn, Firefighters Timothy Cuilla, Charlie Wheeler, Adam Wertman, Kyle Ropeter, and TJ Mellon successfully located and rescued the individual from the icy waters of the Hudson River, ultimately saving their life; and

Whereas, the actions of these brave individuals exemplify the highest standards of volunteerism, selflessness, and unwavering commitment to public safety, putting the lives of others before their own and demonstrating exceptional courage in a time of crisis; and

Whereas, it is important to recognize that these heroic efforts were made by volunteer firefighters, individuals who dedicate their time, energy, and expertise to protecting and serving our community without monetary compensation; and

Whereas, the Mechanicville Fire Department’s role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our residents cannot be overstated, and their response to this critical situation highlights their indispensable value to our community; and

Now, Therefore, I, Michael J. Butler, Mayor of the City of Mechanicville, do hereby formally recognize and commend Deputy Fire Chief Matthew Dunn and Firefighters Timothy Cuilla, Charlie Wheeler, Adam Wertman, Kyle Ropeter, and TJ Mellon for their extraordinary, heroic, and lifesaving actions on January 10, 2025. Their courage, skill, and swift response saved a life, and they embody the true spirit of volunteerism and service.
