Although it is classified as a city it has the atmosphere of a village. Mechanicville has the distinction of being the smallest city in New York State with an area of eight tenths of a square mile. Over the years the population has remained fairly consistent with approximately 5,000 people. A large percentage of them are senior citizens who have lived here their whole lives. To the north lies the town of Stillwater with Saratoga Lake and the Saratoga Battlefield. To the south and west lies Halfmoon and Clifton Park with its large shopping centers and malls only a few minutes away. To the east, the town of Schaghticoke with its golf course, Willard Mountain ski area and horseback riding facilities. The city has a Commissioner form of government with a Mayor who oversees the Police and Fire Departments, the other Commissioner's head up the Accounts, Finance, Public Safety and Public Works departments. Locally, the city has a number of well established businesses to serve the needs of the community and its citizens, such as grocery stores, beauty salons, barbershops, insurance agencies, banks, restaurants, fast food establishments, auto repair shops and car dealerships, to name just a few. Shortly the construction of a 294 apartment complex will be started on the north end of the community across from the Price Chopper shopping plaza. The city has a well-established school system, library, community center, and churches of different denominations. The city is located on the banks of the Hudson River with a large dock area which provides docking facilities for a number of yachts that travel the river from Lake Champlain to New York City. During the summer months a number of community activities are held on the large city dock. Recently the city has constructed a boat launch for canoes and kayaks. Just outside the city are a number of golf course and campgrounds. Within a half hours traveling distance, there are no less than 9 colleges and Universities. Within the city boundaries there are a number of playgrounds and parks which provide various activities and programs thru out the year. Presently there are number of well-maintained 1 and 2 family homes on the market thru out the city. With interest rates at an all-time low and with older well maintained homes selling for less this may be the time to consider locating in Mechanicville, considering all that it has to offer a prospective homebuyer.
